Falling

 Notes:

This is a very special song for me because the chorus came out of nowhere. I was walking into university one day in Ecuador and a security guard was strumming simple chords on a guitar. I immediately starting singing to myself: “Falling in love or just falling.” A few weeks later the song was written. This song is about the precariousness of love – those moments when you are not sure if the other person feels the same. Are you falling down a hole with unrequited love or is this really falling in love? It’s a special song to me because I wrote most of it weeks before my wife Carolina was first diagnosed with cancer, so the precariousness is real. But there’s also an innocence about the song that I appreciate. It’s almost like a postcard from a previous life.

Lyrics:

Sometime you’re sweet, sometimes you’re so cold.

Don’t you get tired of playing games?

I wanna see how this story unfolds.

Am I deluded, do you feel the same?

Is this falling in love, falling in love, am I falling in love or just falling?

Don’t wanna be falling

Sometimes I see you and you look right through me.

Are you just playing hard to get?

And do you care what you’re doing to me?

I guess I haven’t got you figured out yet

Is this falling in love, falling in love, am I falling in love or just falling?

Don’t wanna be falling

When you go it’s like I’m falling fast. I don’t know if we are going to last

But when I’m with you I touch the sky. You make me feel I can fly, like I can fly

Sometime you’re sweet, sometimes you’re so cold

Don’t you get tired of playing games?

I wanna see how this story unfolds.

Am I deluded, do you feel the same?

Is this falling in love, falling in love, am I falling in love or just falling?

And only you can keep me from falling

Let in the light

Notes:

This song has a simple message about opening up about your troubles, I’m singing to someone who is going through a very tough time and encouraging them to let their emotions out, get rid of darkness and let in light. I’m really singing to myself and my children, but there’s also a message in particular in this song to men who often find it very difficult to open up about their emotional problems. One of the verses makes my daughter smile: “You are filled with so many questions, answers that you can’t work out.” That’s a reference to the vast quantity of questions she asks such as: “How many blades of grass are in this field?” That’s a lighter moment for me.

Lyrics:

I don’t wanna fight about it. It doesn’t get us anywhere

But what’s the use in hiding away from it? Cos you say it’s too much for you to bear

So you think it’s best left unsaid? That’s why you never speak your mind

All the thoughts kept locked in your head – twisted roots along the path of time

Some days you feel as if the walls are closing in,

But open your eyes because you don’t know what the day will bring

But there you go again –  turning on your friends

Acting that you’re doing well, when deep down it’s hell. Let me tell you now

Let it all flow out of you tonight. Drive out the dark and let in the light

You gotta let in the light

You are filled with so many questions, answers that you can’t work out

There’s a burden on your shoulders. I’ve never seen you plagued with so much doubt

You could spend your whole life wondering what it is that’s going wrong

You could search the whole world over, but you’ll find it’s in you all along.

Some days you wake up thinking how you’re gonna get through

But open your heart and it will show you what you better do

But there you go again –  turning on your friends

Faking that you’re doing well, when deep down it’s hell. Listen to me now

Let it all flow out of you tonight. Drive out the dark and let in the light

You gotta let in the light

I will never leave you

Notes:

This song is the hardest for me to sing. I wrote it for my wife Carolina when she was going through cancer treatment. I have never sung this song in public since then. It was recorded only two months after her death and I ended up a sobbing wreck in the studio after laying down the vocal. It illustrated very clearly that at that point I was not at all ready to make music about what I was going through. It is a message both from me to her and from her to me – that when someone is in your heart, they never leave you. The climax of the song came from a poem I wrote for Carolina and the children when I used to go off travelling for my books and we were missing each other: “I’m in your heart, as you are in mine, we are forever entwined.” I read the poem in my eulogy to her. This song is dedicated to all those who have suffered from cancer and to their families.

Lyrics:

I have travelled so far to discover who you are

I have come so far

It is natural having doubts, but stay with me and I’ll cast them out

Cast away your doubts

But if you cannot find the way, I will take your hand

And I will never leave you, I will never leave you

Here alone, you’ll never be alone

Come with me it’s a brand new day. Don’t you ever lose your faith

You just got to have faith

When you leave me, I will be here

To take away your ever fear, I will be right here

But if you cannot find the light, I will be your sight

And I will never leave you, I will never leave you

Here alone, you’ll never be alone

I have travelled so far to discover who you are

I have come so far

But if you cannot find the way, I will take your hand

And I will never leave you, I could never leave you

Cos I’m in your heart, as you are in mine.

We are forever entwined, we are forever entwined

Time, heal me

Notes:

This song comes from exhaustion and a desire to be healed. The phrase “time is a healer” is used so often when explaining grief that it’s almost a cliché. Clichés usually contain a grain of truth and I’ve found pain does ease with time. But it doesn’t disappear, and the implication of the song is that I’m not yet healed. I don’t know if anyone ever is completely but this song is a plea for peace and intended to soothe the listener. The inclusion in the song of my children, a lover, my parents and sister acknowledges that the ones you love can help you get through tough times.

Lyrics:

Time heal me. Time free me

Take this pain. Make me whole again

Children hear me. Always be near to me

Take my hand. Understand

Don’t you run away from me, just stay with me, and lay with me

Lover, hold me. Caress the cold from me

Free your will. Time stands still

Father, teach me. Mother, reach me

Brother, raise me up. Sister, show me love

Don’t you run away from me, just stay with me, and lay with me

Time heal me, time heal me

Time heal me.
